What is it?

The State of Young Black New York is an annual symposium held by young professionals of color to address the pressing social issues of our time. Through discussion among community leaders and young professionals, we aim to facilitate meaningful dialogue to empower all young people of color to take action in improving their lives and their communities.

To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time.

Trauma and Mental Health

in Black America

Do we recognize the trauma we live with? What are the effects of videos of police brutality, covert discrimination in employment and housing, violence in our communities and more? What systems are in place to address trauma in our community?

Black Feminism: Women in America

Though women represent over 50% of the American population, sexism and prejudice against women still remains. In the black community despite examples of female leaders there is still stigma against ambitious women. Still, women often make significant careers decisions based on the need to care for children and families; is this fair? How can we ensure that women are empowered and men are educated to celebrate women’s success?

Breaking the Chains:

Intergenerational poverty

President Obama has given voice to the institutional racism that has led to clear disparities in communities of color. After 2016, how do we move from recognizing chasms in wealth, education and housing to fostering change?

Millennials and the Media:

An Imperfect Union

Millennials more than any generation before are able to select and filter their media sources and content. What does this mean for media companies and how are they adapting? What is the role for black news outlets today? How do they engage and retain younger readers? What is black media's impact today, socially? Electorally?

It Takes a Village?

Intra Community Dissonance

50 years ago, the black community was unified in demanding a host of rights that were once denied, chief among them: voting rights. Today, that unity seems to be missing. Is the black community unified enough to face our challenges in 2016?

Criminal Justice Reform:

Fighting the Ghost of Jim Crow

Black America was shackled by Jim Crow for decades, resulting in vast educational, wealth and civic gaps in our society. Today is Jim Crow our U.S. Prison System, where blacks are disproportionately trapped? How do we reform a system that has ravaged our community and led to the same disparities that Jim Crow created?
