SOYBNY is a signature event of the New York Urban Leage Young Professionals. This symposium brings together young professionals and leaders from various disciplines to discuss the challenges of young black New York and solutions we can take.
SOYBNY 2016 will feature a keynote speaker and six panel discussions; each with unique perspectives on issues that affect us every day.
We are in a unique time; the end of the first black presidency.
How will we make progress and bring change in 2016 and beyond?
Though women represent over 50% of the American population, sexism and prejudice against women still remains. In the black community despite examples of female leaders there is still stigma against ambitious women. Still, women often make significant careers decisions based on the need to care for children and families; is this fair? How can we ensure that women are empowered and men are educated to celebrate women’s success?
Millennials more than any generation before are able to select and filter their media sources and content. What does this mean for media companies and how are they adapting? What is the role for black news outlets today? How do they engage and retain younger readers? What is black media's impact today, socially? Electorally?
Black America was shackled by Jim Crow for decades, resulting in vast educational, wealth and civic gaps in our society. Today is Jim Crow our U.S. Prison System, where blacks are disproportionately trapped? How do we reform a system that has ravaged our community and led to the same disparities that Jim Crow created?
The New York Urban League Young Professionals (NYULYP) is a unique entity of the New York Urban League designed to serve as an empowerment forum for individuals ages 21-40 who live and work throughout the five boroughs of New York City. This premier civil rights auxiliary group promotes the mission of the New York Urban League by training the next generation of leaders through volunteer opportunities, personal and professional development, and fund development. This deeply rooted movement serves as a network of young professionals across the country that works to eradicate social and economic inequalities through the local implementation of the National Urban League’s empowerment agenda.
